Types of Hernia

One surgery, five hernia types.

Our laparoscopic hernia repair is the modern, minimally-invasive fix for every type of hernia. Here’s the surgery itself, followed by the five common hernia types we treat at Suvira.

Inguinal hernia consultation Most common

Inguinal HerniaGroin

By far the most common type — tissue pushes through the inguinal canal in the groin. More frequent in men.

Tell-tale signs
  • Soft lump in the groin or scrotum
  • Heaviness when standing or lifting
  • Bulge disappears when lying flat
Umbilical hernia exam

Umbilical HerniaBelly button

Appears at or near the navel when tissue protrudes through the abdominal wall. Common in newborns and adults with abdominal pressure.

Tell-tale signs
  • Outward bulge at the belly button
  • More visible when coughing or straining
  • Mild discomfort or fullness
Femoral hernia consultation

Femoral HerniaUpper thigh

Tissue pushes through the femoral canal just below the groin. Less common, but more frequent in women — and more likely to need urgent attention.

Tell-tale signs
  • Lump high on the inner thigh
  • Discomfort that worsens with activity
  • Higher risk of strangulation — treat early
Hiatal hernia diagnosis

Hiatal HerniaDiaphragm

Part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest. Closely linked with chronic acidity / GERD.

Tell-tale signs
  • Persistent acid reflux / heartburn
  • Chest discomfort after meals
  • Difficulty swallowing, regurgitation
Incisional hernia surgery

Incisional HerniaOld surgical scar

Forms at the site of a previous surgery, where the abdominal wall has weakened along the healed incision.

Tell-tale signs
  • Bulge or swelling at an old scar
  • Tenderness when straining
  • Often appears months or years post-surgery

Treatment Options

Open surgery vs laparoscopic.

Same operation, very different experience. Here’s the honest side-by-side — in numbers that matter.

Traditional

Open Surgery

A single long incision over the hernia. Still useful for very large or complex cases.

8–12cm single incision
One long cut over the hernia site
  • Hospital stay 2–3 nights
  • Post-op pain Significant
  • Back to work 2–3 weeks
  • Bilateral hernias Needs two incisions
  • Visible scar Long & permanent
Recommended
Modern keyhole

Laparoscopic Repair

Three small ports, a camera and tension-free mesh. The global standard for most hernias today.

5–10mm each port
Just 3 small ports, no big cut
  • Hospital stay Daycare or 1 night
  • Post-op pain Mild — oral pills
  • Back to work 5–7 days
  • Bilateral hernias Both sides, one go
  • Visible scar Nearly invisible

What is a Hernia?

A weakness in the wall — felt as a bulge.

A hernia happens when tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscle wall. It won't heal on its own — but with modern laparoscopic repair, treatment is faster and easier than it used to be.

Won't heal on its own

Surgery is the only definitive fix — medication can't repair the muscle gap.

Grows over time

Small hernias today become larger, riskier surgeries if left untreated for years.

Highly treatable

Modern laparoscopic mesh repair has very low recurrence and quick recovery.

Symptoms & when to consult

Two situations. Two very different timelines.

Most hernias don't need same-day surgery — but some symptoms do need same-day attention. Here's how to tell them apart.

Plan a routine consultation

If your hernia is small, soft, and you can gently push it back in — book an OPD visit at your convenience. Most patients in this group have time to plan a daycare laparoscopic repair.

  • Soft, reducible lump in the groin, navel or old scar
  • Mild heaviness or pulling, mainly when standing
  • Bulge appears with cough or strain, settles when lying flat
  • Persistent acidity / reflux (suspect hiatal hernia)
  • Recurrent bulge near a previous surgical scar

Treat as urgent — call now

If a hernia becomes stuck, painful and won't push back in, the blood supply may be cut off. This is a surgical emergency — call us before going to a non-equipped facility.

  • Sudden severe pain in the bulge
  • Lump won't go back in even when lying flat
  • Skin over the bulge red, warm or discoloured
  • Nausea, vomiting or fever along with the pain
  • Inability to pass stool / gas

Frequently asked

Everything you wanted to ask, answered honestly.

Is laparoscopic hernia surgery safe?

Yes — laparoscopic hernia repair is the global standard of care for most hernias today. At Suvira, the procedure is performed by senior surgeons in HEPA-filtered modular OTs with full anaesthesia monitoring. Serious complications are rare. Like any surgery, it carries small risks of bleeding, infection or recurrence — we discuss these openly during your pre-op consultation.

How soon can I return to work?

Most patients with desk jobs return to work in 5–7 days. Patients with physically demanding work (heavy lifting, factory floor, farming) typically need 3–4 weeks. Full activity, including gym and heavy lifting, is cleared at 4–6 weeks.

Do all hernias really need surgery?

Not always. Very small, asymptomatic hernias in elderly patients with multiple medical risks may be managed conservatively with lifestyle changes and a hernia belt. However, any hernia that's growing, painful or affecting daily life should be repaired — and earlier surgery is always easier than emergency surgery. Dr. Vipin gives an honest opinion at OPD — including when surgery isn't needed.

Will the mesh cause long-term problems?

Modern lightweight polypropylene meshes are extremely well tolerated and designed to last a lifetime. Mesh-related complications are uncommon with experienced laparoscopic placement. The mesh becomes part of your tissue within weeks — you won't feel it. Older "heavyweight" meshes that caused problems decades ago are no longer used at Suvira.

What's the chance of the hernia coming back?

With modern laparoscopic mesh repair by an experienced surgeon, recurrence rates are typically below 2–3%. This compares very favourably with older techniques (recurrence up to 10–15%). Following post-op activity guidance — especially lifting limits in the first 6 weeks — further reduces this risk.

How much pain should I expect after surgery?

Most patients describe the pain after laparoscopic hernia repair as "much less than I expected". You'll have some soreness at the port sites and a feeling of bloating for the first 1–2 days, controlled with mild oral pain-killers. By day 3–4, most patients no longer need regular pain medication.

How does the cashless process work?

It's simple: bring your insurance card and ID at admission. Our TPA team submits the pre-authorisation directly to your insurer (typically approved in 2–4 hours), handles approvals during your stay, and finalises the discharge with the insurer — you don't pay out of pocket for covered amounts. We accept 30+ insurers, CGHS and ESI panels.

Can I exercise / travel after hernia surgery?

Yes — with a sensible timeline. Light walking is encouraged from day 1. Driving and brisk walking from week 2. Cardio and light gym from week 3. Heavy lifting and contact sports from week 6. Domestic flights are fine from week 1; long-haul international from week 3.

Is hernia surgery covered by insurance?

Yes — hernia surgery is a standard, fully covered procedure in virtually all health insurance policies in India. There's no waiting period for most policies that have completed their initial waiting term. Our team will verify your specific coverage and any sub-limits before admission.
