I had both knees replaced within 3 months of each other by Dr. Mahendra Punia. I was walking without any support by day 2 after each surgery. No pain, great physiotherapy team, clean rooms. I was 68 years old and hadn't walked without pain in 5 years. Suvira gave me my life back.

My father had a complex hip fracture after a fall. He was 78 years old. Dr. Punia operated within 12 hours of admission. No pre-surgery complications, walked with support by day 3. The trauma team is excellent. The staff is caring and professional throughout. Highly recommended.

ACL reconstruction by Dr. Rajiv Gupta — back to playing football in 6 months. The surgery was done as a day-care procedure and I went home the same evening. The physio team was phenomenal. If you play sports and have a knee injury, this is the place to go in Jaipur.

I had a slipped disc causing severe sciatica for 18 months. Two doctors had told me I needed open surgery. Dr. Puneet Gupta performed a minimally invasive microdiscectomy — 1.5 cm incision. I was discharge in 48 hours pain-free. The contrast with before was extraordinary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to your orthopedic questions.

Am I too old for a knee or hip replacement?

Age alone is not a contraindication for joint replacement. Patients in their 80s and even 90s successfully undergo joint replacement surgery at Suvira — provided their general health (heart, kidney, lung function) is adequate for anaesthesia. The relevant question is your functional status, not your age. A thorough pre-operative assessment by our team determines your suitability. Many of our most grateful patients are in their 70s and 80s — people who spent years in unnecessary pain assuming surgery wasn't an option for them.

How soon can I walk after knee replacement surgery?

Most patients take their first steps — with support — within 6–24 hours of their knee replacement at Suvira. Our physiotherapy team begins bedside exercises within hours of surgery. By day 2–3, patients are walking short distances with a walker; by discharge (day 3–4), they're climbing shallow steps. Walking without a stick typically begins at 4–6 weeks. The key is not rushing the recovery but following the structured physiotherapy plan from day 1.

What is the difference between a slipped disc and sciatica?

A slipped (herniated) disc refers to the physical condition — where the soft inner material of a spinal disc bulges through its outer shell and presses on a nearby nerve. Sciatica is the symptom — radiating pain, numbness or weakness travelling down the leg along the path of the sciatic nerve — that most commonly results from a herniated lumbar disc pressing on a nerve root. Not all slipped discs cause sciatica, and not all sciatica is from a disc. An MRI scan will identify the exact cause, and Dr. Puneet Gupta can determine whether conservative management or minimally invasive surgery is the right approach.

What is arthroscopy — and is it really keyhole surgery?

Yes — arthroscopy is genuinely minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery. The surgeon makes 2–3 small incisions of 5–10mm around the joint, inserts a tiny camera (arthroscope) and slim instruments, and performs the procedure under live video guidance. No large incision, no major muscle cutting. For ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, rotator cuff surgery and many shoulder conditions, arthroscopy means same-day or next-day discharge, far less post-operative pain and a much faster return to sport compared to traditional open surgery.

Is joint replacement surgery covered by health insurance?

Yes — total knee replacement, total hip replacement and most major orthopedic procedures are covered under all major health insurance policies in India, including Star Health, HDFC ERGO, ICICI Lombard, Bajaj Allianz, Niva Bupa, Care Health, CGHS and ESI. The implant cost, surgical charges, anaesthesia, physiotherapy and hospitalisation are typically included. Suvira Hospital is empanelled with 30+ insurers and our dedicated TPA desk handles pre-authorisation completely on your behalf.

How long do knee and hip implants last?

Modern joint replacement implants from premium manufacturers (used exclusively at Suvira) are designed to last 20–25+ years in the majority of patients when properly implanted and cared for. Studies show that more than 90% of total knee replacements last at least 15 years, and more than 80% last 20+ years. The longevity depends on implant quality, surgical precision, patient weight, activity level and follow-up care. We advise annual check-ups and a personalised activity programme to maximise implant life.

How do I know if I need surgery or can be treated conservatively?

This is the most important question — and the answer depends on a thorough clinical assessment, imaging review and understanding of your functional impact and goals. Conservative treatment (physiotherapy, medications, injections) works well for many conditions, especially at earlier stages. Surgery is typically recommended when conservative treatment has failed for 3–6 months, when there is significant structural damage (advanced arthritis, complete ACL tear), or when the condition poses a risk of serious long-term disability. Our surgeons will give you an honest, evidence-based opinion — we never recommend surgery unless it is genuinely in your best interest.

Who is the best orthopedic surgeon for knee replacement in Jaipur?

Dr. Mahendra Singh Punia, Senior Orthopedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon at Suvira Hospital Mansarovar, is one of Rajasthan's most experienced and sought-after knee and hip replacement surgeons. With 20+ years of practice and more than 5,000 joint replacements performed — including complex primary and revision procedures — he combines technical excellence with a caring, patient-first approach.
